The method is one line: retail = materials × markup, plus wastage, plus labour. Every term below has a job. Skip one and the bouquet pays for it.
What counts as materials?
Every stem, counted one by one, plus the consumables: ribbon, tape, the holder, the wrap. The sample recipe carries a €31 posy holder — hard goods are often the biggest line, and the easiest to forget. Count what leaves the studio, not just what blooms.
How much markup on a bouquet?
Markup covers what the stems alone don't: rent, cooler, van, the quiet Tuesday. Most studios run 2× to 3.5× on materials. There is no correct multiplier — a wedding piece carries more design time than a market bunch. Pick a number that keeps the lights on, then hold it.
What is wastage?
Flowers are perishable stock. Stems snap, guard petals drop, a bucket turns before it sells. Wastage puts a flat percentage on materials — 8% in the sample — so the bouquets you sell pay for the ones you couldn't. Track your real number for a month; most studios are surprised.
How do I price labour?
Minutes times an hourly rate. The sample logs 26 minutes; at €12 an hour that is €5.20 — before conditioning, cleanup, and the consult. Unpaid labour is the most common pricing mistake in floristry: the bouquet looks profitable and the week doesn't. If you'd pay an assistant for the hour, pay yourself.
A worked example
The sample above is a real recipe from our demo studio: one dahlia, rosemary, wheat, a posy holder. Materials €40.60, marked up 1.74× to €70.64, plus €3.25 wastage, plus €5.20 labour — €79.09 retail. Not a rulebook: a record. Swap in your stems and your numbers.
The three classic mistakes
Doubling materials and calling it done — that's a markup with no wastage and no labour. Forgetting consumables — ribbon and holders are real money. Working for free — labour left at zero. The calculator above makes all three visible.
